DOCTORS: My daughter/valedictorian wants to be a neurologist, but under Obamas plan it doesn't pay, what next?
Jul 30, 2009 by Sierra | Posted in Medicine
My daughter has always wanted to be a neurologist or a neurosurgeon, she is on mislay to be her school's valedictorian. She loves science. Under Obama's new plan though, we read that specialists will now be paid virtually the same as doctors who didn't go on to specialize. Finances for her would be penny-pinching, even with scholarships, so she hesitates to pursue a degree that puts her in 3 or more years of debt now added on the that from medical school, sagacious that the financial compensation might be the same as if you don't specialize or very close to that. She may decide she loves the medical field so much that she forgoes a altered consciousness salary, but with that much debt to specialize she feels under Obama's plan that it may not even be feasible anymore! If that turns out to be the at all events, is there any other career that you can think of where she can make as much as a neurologist and that uses her love for science that we aren't thinking about. She doesn't desire to have worked this hard all her life and be so much in debt and end up making 100 grand when she could have made 300 K or more previously and all the school loans wouldn't assist the years in school if she were only to make what a principal at a high school does now! '
So our question: In the field of biology is there something else she could investigate with high salaries and something that the control couldn't have their hands on her salary. We doubt working in a lab pays much, but what might?
P.S. the AMA needs to back off of supporting this bill, it's horrible to your occupation! It is changing the plans of young people interested in helping others just because they can no longer afford the knowledge to end up with a meagar salary. It's just not right! Write your senators!
TO the first YAHOO ANSWER: My daughter is the one ASKING me to ASK others for suggestion about other possibilities she may not have thought of! I could care less if she was a teacher (like my other daughter) or a mail man! I just know she is one of the smartest girls I have knowledge of and I'd hate for her to have to choose from being in 200 K of college debt to become the neurosurgeon and then find out she can't afford to pay back her loans under the stringent payment aim in the new healthcare bill. If I knew she could also enjoy Forensics or something that maybe the gov't didn't get their hands on then I could just forward the info. to her and say, "yea a doctor on yahoo said you only have to go to 4 years of school and you can still have a life's work in the forensics field and get your doctorate in such and such, the gov't isn't involved, and you can make a million a year" then why wouldn't I obsolete that information along to her? You know?
QUIZBY- AGAIN IT"S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY< IT"S ABOUT SPENDING 200,000 in MEDICAL SCHOOL AND NOT BEING Capable TO PAY IT BACK!!! DO YOU GET IT!!! MY husband is an eye doctor and we had to take out 100,000 in loans to get him through school and every month is struggle for us to pay it. So my daughter sees this and says, unfortunately my imagine to HELP PEOPLE as a brain surgeon has just gone out the window SINCE I CAN"T AFFORD IT if this bill passes. You honestly can't see what I'm getting at here? I didn't think this was rocket science or a question of ethics that she was entering the field to have a yacht, it was a mistrust of paying back loans and just being able to buy bread at the store without the creditors calling being in that much debt!
Associate = you don't get this question either, I'm starting to wonder how many of you are doctors answering? If currently a specialist makes 250,000 ordinary first year as a neurologist and in the new bill it tells you specialists will make 90,000 for example, then how does a young fianc pay back college loans of a quarter of a million dollars? THIS IS NOT A QUESTION ABOUT ETHICS OR INTEGRITY OF MY DAUGHTER IT IS A Pecuniary QUESTION THAT NO DOCTOR SHOULD HAVE TO MAKE!! the question was simply asking you to think of other careers in the science line she might have to use as backup in case she couldn't afford the 12 years of college and be paid not enough to live one anymore when you add in the advance payments. I don't know anyone who makes 90,000 who supports a house, a cheap car, and food, etc. and then also has to pay on a second dynasty (which is the exact amount that her college loans would equal of 250K) . Why do you know lots of people who fare 90 grand and own 2 houses or something?
John, read the bill like I have, it talks about specialists making the same as other doctors, and STARTING physicians who DO NOT SPECIALIZE for about 120 k, give or take. Again it would be hard to support a home, a cheap car, food and then essentially afford as much as another house rate (the cost of the school loan) on that salary. It is unrealistic. I hope you are right though and the salaries will not be cut by 80% and she can fulfill her reverie, but if I use the promises of Obama not to pass "any bill that has pork in it" and then he passed the Tarp fund/ banking foul up of a bill with TONS of pork, I can't trust he wouldn't chop doctor's salaries this much then either! Again although I hope you're right!
WOLVERINE - ANOTHER IDIOTIC QUESTION With regard to MINE< OBVIOUSLY YOU CAN"T READ WELL AND ARE NOT A DOCTOR EITHER!!! IT"S ABOUT AFFORDING PAYING THE LOANS BACK NOT MY DAUGHTERS Ardour TO CARE FOR PEOPLE AND SCIENCE> DO you seriously think she should end up in a homeless shelter or bankrupt if her debt exceeds her profits, is that the answer? You obviously do not have to pay back 100's of thousands in school loan debt to fulfill your dream or you would know why SO MANY Na DOCTORS ARE GOING BROKE with all the malpractice insurance, fees, loans, etc. So would you tell the gynecologists who are powerless to practice due to the malpractice fees, "oh shut up, you are supposed to be bankrupt, you obviously don't care about the patients and all you attend to about is money?" NONE OF YOU MAKE ANY SENSE!!!!
OK SORRY JON and RAVENZDA made sense although I still disagree that I can trust salaries wouldn't be cut like Jon said. But at least you two were irksome to make some sense!
ALTHOUGH STILL NO ONE HAS ANSWERED THE QUESTION about other fields, not in healthcare that would include her love of science and that she could feign a decent living at. Oh well, maybe there are no doctors out there afterall who know about school loans, malpractice fees, etc. . .
P.S. Since I've decisive this is going to be the longest yahoo thing ever, do you know under Obama's bill when he says your plans won't change, that you can no longer see a professional without "permission" from your doctor or the gov't. That was what we all hated in our HMO's 20 years ago and now we get to go back to that. So I consider that a big change. Something to meditate upon.
Do you think they have a contest for the most typed in one question, I think I'd win, don' t you!!!!!
WOW I"M THE CRAZIEST PERSON ON YAHOO TONIGHT YEAAA!!!!!! I"M SO Uninterested!!!!! I"VE BEEN UP FOR 24 HOURS STRAIGHT!!!! YEA!!!!!!
SEMI CONSTANT GARDENER: YEA!!! When all is said AN ANSWER!! YOU WIN SO FAR!!! And you are correct about the political ax because the reason I wrote the question was that I spent all evening researching schools to help my daughter and then figuring out loans and helping her and being happy then went online and found how on a folio in the healthcare bill it talked about specialists not making more than physicians, and goggled more and read more and yep that's what it said. So it was angering to muse on now she couldn't afford 12 years of school if the salary wasn't there to back it up. But I agree with you there are lots of pay back plans if you drudgery in a shortage area so I would only encourage her to try everything conceivable not discour. to fulfill her dreams. But she also has to know about the financial realities if this bill drops salar. for neuro. to 100K starting vs. 500, since it would be exhausting to pay back the debt. Not possible I hope or only rich kids, not the best, & brightest would apply!
SEMI Sempiternal GARDENER< I PICK YOU AS BEST ANSWER BUT sadly I shall now be deleting my question since I haven't heard from any doctors and frankly I'm getting dead beat of being berated and misunderstood by the other yahoo dopes (all except you, Jon, and the other chick). But yes, your answer was probably the best miserable I can't hand you points though!! And don't worry I'm sure my daughter won''t listen to any negativity in stopping her dreams of Serving PEOPLE, since she is the most caring girl in the world and money isn't an object for her or really on her "brain" (no pun intended) at 17, it's a parents' distress of how the world is changing sometimes for the worse and how you only want your best for your child and would hate to see them in a financial bind honest because they worked so hard to all their lives to follow their dreams!
